Chapter 8

“Where am I?”

No one answered, but the single bed surrounded by plain white walls with a television mounted in the corner of the room made it clear it was a hospital of some sort. That was even before Margot noticed the tubes in her arm.

A nurse walked in and smiled. “Good to see you’re awake.”

“Good to be awake. What am I doing here?”

“You had a concussion and a minor skull fracture.”

“A skull fracture can be minor?”

“It’s all relative. It’s more a fissure than a crack, and we didn’t have to induce a coma to reduce brain swelling.”

“I have a swollen brain?”

“You did.”

“I’m better now?”

“Better than you were two days ago.”

“Two days? I thought you said I wasn’t in a coma.”

“I said we didn’t have to induce one.”

“So, what do you do about a skull fracture?”

“Probably better to talk to the doctor about that.”

“He’s not here, you are.”

“Well, not much, to be honest. Pain management and observation really. How do you feel?”

“Like I need a drink.”

“Do you want someone to talk to about alcoholism?”

“Are they bringing drinks?”

“No.”

“Then I’ll pass. Actually, I feel pretty good, all things considered.”

The nurse pointed at the morphine drip attached to a tube that ran into the crook of Margot’s elbow. “That might have something to do with that.”

“Where’s Amber?”

“Who?”

“Amber Lynn Hollis. I’m currently supposed to be her bodyguard. It’s how I came to get that swollen brain.”

“I’m not one to judge a person's career choices, but maybe you should consider getting into another line of work.”

“Honestly, I’ve had worse.”

“I’ve seen the scars, but brain injuries are nothing to mess with.”

“I wasn’t trying to get punched in the head.”

“I’m sure you weren’t.”

“To be fair, you should have seen the other guy,” Margot said as she looked around and noticed her phone on a small table to the side of the bed. It was just out of her reach, so she said to the nurse, “Can you hand me my phone?”

The table was on wheels, so the nurse pushed the whole thing to where Margot could reach.

Cobb poked his head in the door. “Good, you’re awake. We were worried.”

“Thanks for caring. Speaking of being worried, where’s Amber?”

“In a safe place.”

“How safe? Last I checked there was still at least one of them on the loose plus the Courtlands.”

“I can’t speak for the driver, but the Courtlands are in custody.”

“Good.”

“I don’t know how good it is. So, far there’s nothing to link them to the crew that caused all the mayhem.”

“Other than they were using their van.”

Cobb shrugged. “All indications are it was stolen. They were still in California when it went missing. We pulled all their phone records, and emails but couldn’t find anything to indicate any coordination.”

“There are other ways.”

“Sure, but that doesn’t constitute any kind of proof. They claim not to know Ivan Ivanovitch or any of his accomplices, and we haven’t been able to establish any connection.”

“Ivan Ivanovitch?”

“Yeah, the guy we took alive, though that’s not his name. He didn’t have I.D. and so far, his prints haven’t turned up on any databases.
